Extraction Process
Cinnamon bark essential oil is typically extracted using steam distillation, a process that preserves the oil’s aromatic compounds and therapeutic properties:
Steam Distillation: The bark of the Cinnamomum verum tree is collected and dried. It is then placed in a steam distillation apparatus, where steam is passed through the bark, releasing the essential oil. The steam carrying the oil vapor is condensed and collected, and the oil is separated from the water. This method is preferred for extracting cinnamon bark oil as it ensures the highest purity and concentration of aromatic compounds.
CO2 Extraction: Although less common, CO2 extraction is a modern technique that can be used to extract cinnamon bark oil. This method uses supercritical carbon dioxide to extract the oil, resulting in a product that closely resembles the original plant material with a broader range of aromatic compounds. CO2 extraction is often used for premium quality oils.
