Extraction Process
Lavender essential oil is commonly extracted through steam distillation, a method that preserves the oil’s delicate aromatic compounds:
Steam Distillation: Fresh or partially dried lavender flowers are placed in a distillation apparatus where steam is passed through them. The heat from the steam causes the oil glands in the flowers to release the essential oil. The steam carrying the oil vapor is then condensed and collected, and the essential oil is separated from the water. Steam distillation is the preferred method for extracting lavender oil as it yields a high-quality product with a full spectrum of aromatic compounds.
Solvent Extraction: In some cases, solvent extraction may be used to produce lavender absolute, a concentrated form of lavender oil with a more intense fragrance. This method is often used for perfumery purposes.
