Extraction Process
The extraction of cardamom essential oil is typically done through steam distillation. Here’s a brief overview of the process:
Steam Distillation: The most common method of extracting cardamom oil, steam distillation involves passing steam through the cardamom seeds. The heat from the steam releases the essential oil from the seeds. The steam carrying the oil vapor is then condensed and collected, allowing the essential oil to separate from the water. This method preserves the integrity of the oil’s aromatic compounds, producing a high-quality product.
Solvent Extraction: Although less common for essential oils, solvent extraction can be used to produce cardamom absolute, a concentrated form of cardamom oil. This method is typically used when a more intense fragrance is desired for perfumery purposes.
